Sara Montiel
María Antonia Abad Fernández was a spanish actress and a versatile artist.
She made her debut in cinema as María Alejandra by the hand of "Te Quiero para Mí" (1944) directed by Ladislao Vajda. After that she played a small role in the film "Empezó en Boda" (1944) by Raffaello Matarazzo as Sara Montiel, her definitive pen name.
But she had her first important acting in "Locura de Amor" (1948) directed by Juan de Orduña. Early she played in films such as "La Mies es Mucha" (1948) by José Sáenz de Heredia, "Pequeñeces" (1950) by Juan de Orduña, or "El Capitán Veneno" (1950) by Luis Marquina.
Because of her beauty and her good qualities as an actress she acted in some films made in Mexico as "Cárcel de Mujeres" (1951) by Miguel M. Delgado, "Piel Canela" (1953) by Juan J. Ortega, "Se Necesitan Modelos" (1954) de Chano Urueta, or "La Ambiciosa" (1955) by Alfredo B. Crevenna.
At once Hollywood noticed to her big success and she acted there in some important films as "Veracruz" (1955) directed by Robert Aldrich, by the side of Gary Cooper and Burt Lancaster, "Serenade" (1956) by Anthony Mann and "Run Of The Arrow" (1957) by Samuel Fuller.
In 1957 she played in "El último Cuplé" (1957) by Juan de Orduña, a film that involved a great success in Spain and gave Sarita the opportunity to show her excellent voice performing her own way passionate cuplés and renewing them.
This film made way for another ones such as "La Violetera" (1958) by Luis César Amadori, "Carmen, La de Ronda" (1959) by Tulio Demicheli, "Mi último Tango" (1960) by Luis César Amadori, "Pecado de Amor" (1961) also directed by Luis César Amadori, "La Bella Lola" (1962) by Alfonso Balcázar, "La Dama de Beirut" (1962) by Ladislao Vajda, "La Reina del Chantecler" (1962) by Rafael Gil, "Noches de Casablanca" (1963) by Henri Decoin, or "La Mujer Perdida" (1966) by Tulio Demicheli.
In all these performances Sara proved to be a perfect singer showing her big sensuality in typified roles.
Her last actings were in films as "Varietés" (1971) by Juan Antonio Bardem and "Cinco Almohadas para una Noche" (1974) by Pedro Lazaga made during "El Destape Age".
Apart from cinema Sara was a successful singer and carried out important tours from all over spanish geography.
She had a lot of love affairs with men such as Ernest Hemingway, James Dean, León Felipe, Gary Cooper, or Miguel Mihura. She was married three times, the first one with the cinema director Anthony Mann, the second one with the manufacturer Vicente Ramírez Olalla, and the third one with Pepe Tous who became the man of her life.
Without any doubt Sara Montiel is still today a glamour paradigm.
